The elite mens race was won by Aussi Dan McConnell world No 4 from under 19 Kiwi pro rider Anton Cooper. The Kiwis had a win in the elite womens race with Karen Hanlen the winner. Sunday was downhill day and the conditions could have been different. Rain from the tail end of a tropical cyclone wet the course. Dangers of Moutainbiking

Friday, January 17, 2014

Just when you think things can't get any worse have a little sympathy for this guy.

LONDON (CBS Atlanta) – A cyclist needed medical intervention at an Irish hospital because an injury he suffered caused his penis to remain erect for nearly two months.

The unnamed bicyclist sustained an injury on the crossbar of his mountain bike that interfered with the blood flow to his penis.

A medical report quoted in the Irish Examiner said the biker’s pain and bruising settled within days, but that he sustained ongoing “high-flow” priapism “with rigid erection”.

After suffering in silence for five weeks, he finally sought medical attention.

A hospital report said the initial examination “revealed no signs of injury, but penis was erect”.

Doctors first tried “manual compression” which would work for a short time, but then the penis would become erect again.

Then they applied a pressure dressing that was in place for two weeks. But once the pressure was removed there was an immediate return of the erection.

Finally doctors  inserted gel foam and four tiny platinum coils at an abnormal connection between an artery and a vein that supplied blood to the man’s penis.

This successfully reduced the blood supply to the penis, ending the erection.

One of the medical technicians said, “We were very happy with the outcome.”

The CDC notes that bicycle parts manufacturers are developing saddles that ease pressure on the genitals.

Bike Methven 679 Cross-Country mountain bike race

Monday, January 06, 2014

Bike Methven ran the 679 mountain bike cross country race in The Mt Hutt Bike Park on Sunday. This was the second year of this race with support from Big Al's. The winner of the 679 x 2 was will known rider from Rangiora Ben Oliver. Ben compared the course favourably with the Hanmer Hammerhead. 1st woman was Ingrid Richter from Nelson. Surprise winner of the 679 race  was downhiller Michael Breading on a borrowed bike. Young Michael flew around the two laps and beat some more fancied riders. Ethan Rose 10 years old smoked around the 679 into 4th place overall. Remember his name as he will be well known if he sticks at it. It was a hot nor west day and everyone had a good ride with a few riders taking on the Novice trail for a first race.

Movember at Mt Hutt

Monday, November 11, 2013

November is rolling on and believe it or not Mt Hutt still has a few riders up most days. Danny Davis and Torah Bright are among the elite riders who have had a 22ft super pipe created to train for the Sochi Olympic games. With northern hemisphere half pipes not yet open a super pipe has been built out of snow at the base of Highway 72. These athletes are unbelievable to watch. If you don't understand why riders are marked for amplitude (hight out of the pipe ) watching Danny Davis sure shows why. Summer events are underway with the Frostbuster multisport event completed last weekend and the 1st mountain bike event at the Mt Hutt Bike Park with a downhill event completed last weekend.

Season changes

Sunday, October 20, 2013

The snow season has ended except for Tora Bright and crew training in Mt Hutts new super pipe. Some exciting times with their snowmobiles is the whisper around town. Talking of hair-raising stunts Bike Methven had its first shuttleday at the Mt Hutt Bike Park. A perfect weather day saw 60 riders on the day. Big Al's is in changeover mode with a big change in the bike set up over the next couple of weeks. Some big events coming up over the summer this year. Keep tuned.

Mt Hutt 10th October

Thursday, October 10, 2013

Mt Hutt today 10th of October had 50 cms of new snow on a 2 metre + base. The snow was fantastic early real winter light and dry. The wind increased as forecast and closed the access road for a while with several snow slides of wind blow snow causing a little excitement. A good crowd turned out for one of the last days of the season with the mountain closing on Sunday.
