Coast to Coast Multisport

Friday, March 06, 2015

The famous Coast to Coast race is over for another year. Braden Currie from Methven and former Big Al's ski tech took the prize for the 2nd year in succession. Bradens crew included several Methven identities who always liven up events. Rob Nisbett from Methven competed in the 2day event and ran in a creditable 5th place after a few inglorious moments. Losing his bike off the roof on the way to the event was always going to be a problem. Then creating a large hole in his kayak when pulling too hard on his fluid container proving too much for his bilge pump. This enabled Rob to prove he could paddle his kayak with twice its normal weight! He now has arms like Popeye. Summer is moving on and the Mt Hutt crew are busy creating some new trails on the mountain. These trails will create some new terrain off the Virgin Mile and Lower Towers. Much more work is being done over at Porters Ski Area. Porters is only an extra 30 mins drive from Methven than Mt Hutt. Porters is putting in a new Chairlift for intermediates and creating a new beginners area for their Magic Carpet. This means there will now be two ski areas with chairlifts within easy access from Methven Mt Hutt Village.

Mountain-biking Canterbury

Wednesday, October 15, 2014

Last Sunday was true last day of Mt Hutts snow season. A remarkable effort by the Mt Hutt crew in a very lean snow year saw the run from Top of the Six to bottom of the Triple still open on closing day. This Sunday sees a new adventure activity starting in Methven. Heli-biking with Mt Hutt air. The first days run was scoped out by RTO and a crew recently. It is a great intermediate ride with some spectacular back country scenery as well as a great ride.

Team Big Al's took out the Veteran Teams event Jenny skied Dave road and the other Dave ran and swum the last leg. With a combined age of 180 + they deserved the prize of a new Zimmer Frame!
